As any responsible pet owner knows, it is imperative that pets are fed on at least a daily basis, some pets require feeding two or three times a day. This is a responsibility that is understood and accepted when getting a pet. However, for busy people with super full schedules, it’s often difficult to be sure your cat or dog is fed at the proper times throughout the day. Some people chose to use a large open bowl or gravity dispenser, however, most vets note this will promote overweight pets as they cannot control the amount they eat.
A gravity dispenser will continually push food down as it’s eaten, so there will always be food available. Many cats and dogs are quite instinctive and will eat any time food is available. This can quickly lead to obesity. Overeating can also lead to other serious health issues in many pets.
An automatic pet food dispenser is a much better option that you can consider to meet your scheduling needs and properly feed your pet. These dispensers can be programmed to dispense a set amount of food at specific times. This means that your pet will only receive the correct amount of food and cannot overeat. Your only responsibility is to make sure that it is kept full and properly programmed.
You should also make sure that the bowl is kept clean. This can be accomplished by rinsing or wiping out the bowl on a regular basis. Though an automatic feeder will be more expensive than a gravity feeder, the additional cost is worth it considering that vet bills for an overweight pet can run quite high. Be sure you maintain the feeder and you will have a happy, well-fed pet that fits your schedule.
